MATCH list

PaymentsRiskUpdated 2026-08-23
The short answer

MATCH is the Member Alert to Control High‑risk Merchants file, Mastercard’s database of merchants terminated by an acquiring bank.

Acquirers check it during underwriting. A listing does not make approval impossible, but it changes every conversation that follows and typically stays for five years.

How a merchant lands on it

An acquirer that terminates a merchant account submits the merchant with a reason code. Common codes in this category include excessive chargebacks, violation of network standards, and identifying the merchant as engaged in a prohibited activity. The merchant is frequently not told at the time.

Why aggregator shutdowns matter more than they used to

Historically a platform closure was just a closure. As enforcement has tightened, a shutdown is more likely to be accompanied by a MATCH submission, which converts a temporary problem into a five‑year one.
